Position Summary

We’re seeking an experienced Copy Editor for PRISM magazine to support a government contract with the Defense Security and Cooperation Agency (DSCA) and the new Irregular Warfare Center (IWC). Seeking a marketing & communications specialist whose expertise in the desired areas of copy-editing, AP Stylebook usage, journal writing, and social media help the Center reach new customers, engage with current ones, and announce new products or services.

PRISM is a forum for advanced scholarship and policy insight on complex and integrated national security operations in the evolving threat environment, including reconstruction, stabilization, irregular warfare, state-building, hybrid and gray-zone conflict, and lessons from the past 20 years. The target audience includes U.S. Federal agencies, allies, and other partners. The copy editor has two major responsibilities. One is the pre-production editing of PRISM article submission. The other is post-production requirements to ensure the smooth publication of the journal PRISM. 


Key Responsibilities

The technical copy editor plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy, clarity, and coherence of technical documents, publications, or content that require a high level of technical expertise. Their primary responsibility is to review and polish technical materials to ensure they meet high standards of quality and effectively convey complex information to the intended audience. The technical copy editor is responsible for refining and enhancing technical content by eliminating errors, improving readability, and maintaining consistency. They bridge the gap between technical subject matter experts and the general audience, ensuring that technical content is accessible and understandable.

  • Grammar and Spelling: Review and correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax errors in technical documents.
  • Clarity and Readability: Ensure that complex technical concepts are communicated clearly and concisely, avoiding jargon that might confuse non-expert readers.
  • Consistency: Maintain consistent usage of terminology, style, formatting, and capitalization throughout the document.
  • Formatting and Layout: Ensure that the document adheres to established formatting guidelines, including font usage, headings, bullet points, numbering, and overall layout.
  • Fact-Checking: Verify the accuracy of technical details, data, statistics, and references cited in the document.
  • Content Flow: Check the logical flow of content, ensuring that ideas are presented in a coherent manner and transitions between sections are smooth.
  • Audience Appropriateness: Tailor the content to the intended audience, ensuring that technical concepts are explained at an appropriate level for the readers' understanding.
  • Citations and References: Verify the accuracy of citations, references, and footnotes to ensure proper attribution of sources.
  • Visual Elements: Ensure the accuracy and consistency of visual elements such as figures, charts, diagrams, and tables.
  • Cross-References: Check cross-references to ensure they are correctly linked and point to the appropriate sections or pages.
  • Style Guidelines: Apply relevant style guides (such as APA, Chicago, IEEE) to ensure the document adheres to the appropriate formatting and citation conventions.
  • Technical Accuracy: Collaborate with technical subject matter experts to clarify ambiguous technical content and ensure accuracy.
  • Revision Tracking: Use revision tracking tools to clearly mark changes and suggestions for the author's review.
  • Version Control: Keep track of document versions and updates, maintaining a clear record of edits and changes made.
  • Feedback and Communication: Provide constructive feedback to authors, highlighting areas for improvement and explaining suggested changes.
  • Meeting Deadlines: Work efficiently to meet established deadlines, especially when dealing with time-sensitive technical documents.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct a final review of the document to ensure that all edits have been correctly implemented and that the final version is error-free.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.
Requirements
  • Must have a minimum of (4) years’ experience working as an experienced copy editor of a major journal, media and communications specialist with expertise in social media posting at a news media, think tank, regional center, university, USG agency, or advertisement agency.
  • Must be able to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to obtain Secret security clearance.
  • Functional understanding of the policy process and Washington, D.C. diplomatic and military organizations and cultures, and the ability to interact with senior foreign representatives.
  • Bachelor’s degree in media, journalism, and/or communications or a related discipline preferred.
  • Resume/portfolio showcasing experience and knowledge in copy editing, communications and marketing.
  • Proficient in working in high-tempo, collaborative environment with revolving deadlines. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively while showcasing knowledge of the Center’s goals and mission through external messaging. 
  • Versatile with a passion for public affairs, communications, marketing and crafting messaging to set the IWC’s audience up for success with essential branded organizational information. 
  • Genuine appreciation for the importance and significance of external messaging with an emphasis on accuracy, clarity, and timeliness. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Located within 50 Miles of National Capital Region

Five (5) years’ experience in editing, media and communications.

U.S. Government media and communications experience.

Active Secret Security clearance. 


Location:

This position is a remote role, with occasional travel.

Competitive Compensation & Benefits

Compensation varies based on factors such as location, experience, and skill set. For positions based in California, Colorado, D.C., Maryland, New York, or Washington, the hourly range is $35.00 – $52.00
